The French Touch - Bistro Mendeleev - Bucharest, Romania

Located in the heart of Bucharest’s Amzei Square, Bistro Mendeleev occupies a charming early 20th-century building—an urban setting where history, culture, and community intersect. The design concept draws inspiration from traditional French bistros: colorful façades, inviting textures, and a welcoming atmosphere that encourages people to gather and linger.

From the outside, the scene is familiar—outdoor seating with comfortable chairs, casual elegance, and visual warmth. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a small pre-function space with high tables. This transitional area acts as a gentle pause, preparing visitors for the central experience: the open kitchen and dining space.

At the heart of the bistro lies the kitchen, fully visible and integrated into the dining room. Architecturally, we allowed the ceiling to fold into the vertical plane, creating a seamless spatial rhythm. This move opened a palette of layered tones—earthy and warm at the base, gradually transitioning to deeper, cooler hues as the eye moves upward.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere. A handcrafted copper exhaust hood immediately draws attention, complemented by striking blue-green ceramic tiles at the bar. The composition is anchored by a sculptural dark wood counter, grounding the space with tactile richness. Walls are divided into three horizontal bands, each defined by distinct finishes and tones, offering quiet depth without overwhelming the space.

The French Touch is expressed through elegant mouldings, bringing a sense of refinement and familiarity while maintaining a contemporary sensibility. These subtle details bridge the past and present, echoing the layered identity of the city itself.

Designed to welcome both early-morning breakfasts and intimate evening dinners, Bistro Mendeleev balances adaptability with emotional resonance. It is a space crafted for rhythm, comfort, and connection—rooted in Bucharest, yet distinctly touched by French charm.
