General Theme
BeerGRDN is a playful fusion between a picnic garden and a beer-centric social space. The concept was inspired by the client’s memorable insight: “If a place is feminine enough for women to come in, the men will follow.” This perspective helped shape an environment that’s both inviting and energetic—casual, yet full of character.
The interior design draws on retro Americana, blending reinterpreted pin-up illustrations—developed as part of the branding—with visual elements from arcade and pop culture. Tables made from old-school arcade machines, vintage graphics, and glowing neon signage create a space that feels spontaneous and fun, while still thoughtfully curated.
Located inside URBN Hotel—the first carbon-neutral hotel in China—BeerGRDN was one of the earliest MANTARAY Studio projects, completed in 2014. The venue sits within a 1970s former post office, repurposed by A00 Architecture into a 26-room boutique hotel. The architectural shell provided an industrial framework that we softened through lush greenery, warm lighting, and tongue-in-cheek details, creating a balance between raw and refined.
BeerGRDN remains a statement about design that doesn’t take itself too seriously—where sustainability, identity, and joy can all coexist in one vibrant space.
